545 vs 300,000,000 Revisited

1. I thought I would repost this. It is so simple and true, not to mention, the most popular post of all time. Naturally I didn't write it.

2. Liberals, please don't write me complaining how it chastises only Democrats. How you come up with that assertion is beyond me. But then again; you are a liberal.

By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red .

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

  3. Charlie, A friend just forwarded your article to me. Where were your opinions like these expressed in the article when Bush was in office? That administration spent money like drunken sailors AND instigated an unneccessary war...why not speak out when the republicans are in the white house? CMK

  4. Carol,

Charlie wrote that when Reagan was in office. The Speaker was Tip O'Neil. The location of the troops was Lebanon. This has either been republished by him, or re-written by someone else so it has a modern focus.

I guess that demonstrates the timelessness and non-partisan nature of the article.

Thank you for setting her straight. How anyone could possibly read the article and come up with the assertion that it is a slap in the face to Democrats is beyond me.

Sometimes its like pulling teeth around here.

  6. Uhh Huh. It's true, those 545 are responsible. And who are we going to replace them with? 545 other people who do not have the same flaws that the existing group has? Where would you find them?

  7. All I thought when I read that article was: "The King is Dead, Long Live The King!" - as in, it's not the PEOPLE that are important but the position (role) that they have. You get rid of the 545 people - with who? 545 more just like them. Some good, some greedy, some wanting change, some wanting things to stay exactly the same - because no matter what campaigns they run, we do NOT know them.

Gov't is like every other business. Wherever you work, there will be some smarmy guy that kiss-assed his way to the top, doesn't understand bugger all and signs everything that's put in front of him. Do you elect these people? Then you did pick them. Did you pick the world? Can you choose who the Prime Minister is in Canada, who is in the House of Commons, who the PM is in England or who is in the UN? And all THOSE rules and requirements and Free Trade agreements, etc.,

stuff happens, yes. But is the whole US going to dump ALL laws (and those sworn to uphold them) and ALL policies and ALL lobbyists down the chute and start from scratch? Things are cumulative - you can't just say: well, world - let's just start over. And in the meantime - all those treaties and laws and taxes and bail-outs we signed (and accepted from other countries) - those might be void. We don't know - just let us wipe the slate and figure it all out, we'll get back to you when we do.

Mopping up 545 people (many of whom, let's hope MOST of whom) KNOW what their job is and are actually committed to doing it isn't going to solve the world's problems. This is more of that finger-pointing of "let the masses riot and uproot the oppressors!" When, in point of fact, probably 50% of THOSE people would be the oppressors themselves, given a kick-back and half a chance.

It's the airplane mentality - in case you need an oxygen mask, put YOURS on first, then you take care of the the kiddos. Insular, yes. Corrupt? Definitely in some (okay a lot) of places. But saying let's rid ourselves of all the pilots and *hope* we don't all go down in flames makes ZERO sense to ME (and I'm Canadian).

Another point: The "golden years" of America weren't that fucking golden. And now if things are a mess, it's the equivalent to looking into a mirror and saying: "is that what you're wearing?"

  8. If you replace them when they don't do what they promise, then and only then will you have a majority that will do what you ask.
And who gives a shit if they all loose there jobs every 4 years? Vote for anyone but lawyers...

  11. I really wish people would stop this conservative -vs- liberal chatter. The point of the article is that it does not matter which you are, they are all part of the same problem and the solution will come when the brain dead zombies stop reacting to this intentional divide and conquer strategy. Be an actor, not a reactor.

The 545 work for the zionist organized crime syndicate that controls nearly everything in the US. Most of them are blackmailed pediphiles as blackmail is the currency of trade in Washington DC, not bribery.

Google Rusty Nelson and Hunter Thompson and how they planned to make a movie with the photos that hunter shot for 30 years. Rusty was picked up in Oregon by the FBI days after Hunter was suicided and never heard from again.

  12. Do you think those people in Congress and the White House have a choice? Kennedy got a bullet in his head and Reagan got a bullet near his heart for trying to change things.

The last three Presidents have been cocaine addicts, do you think such subperforming zeroes of human beings would be at the top of any power pyramid if they weren't compliant puppets appointed specifically for their weakness of character?

People, there may be hope for you and your family and friends, but stop thinking there's hope for America. Washington DC is occupied territory and our leaders are but hostages and puppets.

Get your gold and your guns and stock up your pantry, and wait for our overlords to bankrupt themselves. Because voting won't change anything. If it did, it wouldn't be allowed.
