Coming to America

Vetting Syrian Refugees: Mission Impossible

Hope you're sitting down. This article is from the Huff Post!

----------------------------------------------------

The recent ISIS attacks in Paris and elsewhere has rightfully heightened concern over bringing an additional 10,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S., and more after that. While most Americans are sympathetic to the plight of these refugees, it represents a significant security threat to the nation which cannot be easily discounted or falsely represented as the Obama Administration has sought to do.

Debate in the media as was as in Congress has largely centered on the issue of "vetting" or security screening of incoming Syrian migrants. While an admirable concept, it is realistically the case that this is just impossible to accomplish in this situation - truly a "mission impossible" where the ongoing Syrian civil war has already produced a refugee population in the millions. Data to accomplish a thorough vetting or screening process simply doesn't exist - anywhere. These refugees are coming from war-torn Syria - not Switzerland.

Speaking on the Sunday news shows last week Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes hung to an absurd claim that such a thorough screening of the refugees could be accomplished using "Intelligence Community resources."

Recall this is the same Ben Rhodes who was behind the ridiculous video narrative in the Benghazi terrorist attacks that left four Americans dead.

Senior U.S. intelligence officials have not been quite so foolish. Director of National Intelligence Jim Clapper, CIA Director John Brennan, and NCTC Director Nicholas Rasmussen have all made public statements recently that the intelligence data to support such a through screening process for these Syrian refugees didn't exist or was inadequate for this requirement.

Senators Rubio and Grassley, as well as Congressman Ryan among others have all called for a thorough screening process which may be largely naïve on their part. No act of Congress, even if President Obama were to sign it could make this happen.

If databases to support a thorough vetting process did exist, where would they come from? Syria - highly unlikely that the Syrians have anything like this, or if they did would certainly not share them with the U.S. that has sought their demise for some five years now. Does the CIA or any other allied intelligence service have a database that covers the millions that have fled Syria, and how would it have been compiled? This is an equally absurd notion and no responsible intelligence official has even suggested that one exists. A related notion that somehow the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) could step in and magically concoct one is equally laughable. The bottom line here is that these supposed databases don't actually exist and never will.

Next is the argument that incoming Syrian refugees will be interviewed to see if they are jihadist radicals or ISIS agents. How exactly will that work? Does any U.S. Government agency have a task force of qualified Arabic speaking personnel for this and would they be able to spot all of the ISIS operatives if they did? Will the U.S. try and polygraph every incoming refugee? Highly unlikely.

What is clear from recent news reports and social media postings is that any ISIS operatives coming into the U.S. will have good paperwork and a good story. At present there are a huge number of Syrian passports in the hands of refugees, some stolen and some forged. When ISIS took over Raqqa they also took over the Syrian passport offices so they had the equipment and passport stock to manufacture a large number of "genuine" Syrian passports. They have also confiscated genuine passports from ISIS recruits which they have passed on to their operatives. It is also the case that Syrian passports are being forged in Turkey and other places. Somehow ISIS has failed to provide us with a database that tells us which ones are genuine, and if they are actually held by those named in them.

In terms of the very real threat to the U.S. there is no major secret here. Despite the fact that intelligence reports appear to have been skewed to discount the threat, ISIS has been very clear that they intend to attack targets in the U.S., and have also been claiming on social media for more than two months or more that they had a "clandestine program" to insert ISIS operatives into the Syrian migrant population.

Why should anybody be surprised that they showed up in Paris, or doubt that they will appear elsewhere as well? If nothing else the intelligence services in the U.S. and Europe have failed miserably to monitor and correctly analyze what ISIS has been putting on social media, and communicating to its operatives.

A serious question remains as to whether these rosy intelligence reports have been politically driven by a White House living in denial and totally detached from reality.

A major killer here is the law of large numbers, which states that a small fraction of a large number is still a large number. If only one percent of the 10,000 Syrian refugees are ISIS terrorists, it's more than the number who slaughtered the people of Paris this past week. This is a risk that the U.S. should not take. ISIS has clearly told us what they want to do and how they intend to do it. Further they have amply demonstrated the will and the resources to get it done. Is the Obama Administration that divorced from reality that they won't pay any attention?

If ISIS has its way and stages a major attack in the U.S., what will be the Obama Administration's response? These weren't radical Muslims; it was because of some mythical anti-Muslim video: it was just workplace violence; or the fault of FOX News and the Republicans. Hopefully the Congress can act quickly to stop this before it happens. If we didn't have adequate warning before 9/11, we certainly have it now.

Barry acknowledges California attack was act of terrorism

Barry took his first baby steps.

He actually said the U.S. is "at war with terrorism".

Congratulations!

----------------------------------

President Obama on Sunday night acknowledged that the U.S. is "at war with terrorism" following a series of deadly terror attacks on American soil and around the world, and sought to assure Americans that the growing global terror threat will be defeated.

Obama spoke four days after terrorists apparently associated with ISIS fatally shot 14 people and wounded 21 more in San Bernardino, Calif. Those attacks came 19 days after a series of shootings and suicide bombings in Paris killed 130.

"This was an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people," Obama said of the San Bernardino shooting in his first Oval Office address since 2010. "I am confident we will succeed in this mission because we are on the right side of history."

The president said the San Bernardino attack was inspired by ISIS, but added that it does not appear connected to a larger terror network.

Authorities say a Muslim husband-wife team carried out the attack and that the wife pledged allegiance to ISIS and its leader in a Facebook post.

Though Obama said there was no evidence that the shooters were directed by a terror network overseas or that the attack was part of a broader plot, he noted the couple "had gone down the dark path of radicalization."

He also acknowledged in his 13-minute address that the global terror threat has entered a "new phase."

The president offered no new or specific changes to the military campaign in Iraq and Syria to defeat ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks and several other smaller-scale attacks in recent weeks.

However, Obama called on Congress to tighten America's visa waiver program and to pass a new authorization for military actions already underway against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

But allow in 10,000 unvetted  Syrian refugees.

The effort so far has been a U.S.-led bombing campaign, non-combat U.S. support troops in Iraq and roughly 50 Special Forces members in Syria.

Obama also reiterated his call for tightening U.S. gun laws, saying no matter how effective law enforcement and intelligence are, they can't identify every would-be shooter. He said such a move is a matter of national security to prevent potential killers from getting guns.

Where is the logic in this? CA has some of the strictest gun control laws on record. In 1989 they banned the purchase of assault  rifles. Magazines are limited to 10 rounds.

Like the San Bernardino Muslim terrorists were going to follow the rules already on the books?

There are already an estimated 270 million guns in America. How is "tightening U.S. gun laws" on new purchases going to solve the problem? How are you going make them even tighter?

You have to read between the lines..."Tightening U.S. gun laws" is his attempt to stop gun sales altogether.

"People are really scared," Republican presidential candidate and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said afterward. "Nothing in this speech tonight is going to assuage people's fears."

He also said Obama offered "nothing new" and that tighter gun control would not have prevented the San Bernardino attack.

Obama has been criticized for years for what critics say is his failure to recognize the growing threat of ISIS, calling the group a "JV team" and saying the Paris attacks were just a "setback" in the fight against extremism.

"I know that after so much war, many Americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate cure," he said, speaking from a lectern in his West Wing office.

While Obama has spoken frequently about ISIS in recent news conferences and at other events, the decision to speak in prime-time reflected concern among his advisers that his message isn't breaking through.

The White House has been particularly concerned about the heated rhetoric from Republican presidential candidates about Muslims.

Obama implored Americans to not turn against Muslims at home, saying ISIS was driven by a desire to spark a war between the West and Islam. However, he also called on Muslims in the U.S. and around the world to take up the cause of fighting extremism.

The spread of radical Islam, Obama said, is "a real problem that Muslims most confront without excuse." And he said that Muslims in America must not be treated differently.

"If we do that we lose," Obama said.

Clearly... no one is THIS equipped for a "workplace dispute"

Won't hear this from the FBI folks but this was a terrorist attack. How long have they been investigating Killary's emails again?

Workplace dispute may be the new catch phrase. Like how Global Warming morphed into Climate Change.

“A neighbor said she noticed a half-dozen Middle Eastern men coming and going all hours of the day and night in recent weeks, but decided not to report anything since she did not wish to racially profile those people.”

(Probably learned that from the Clock-Sucker)

--------------------------------

The two attackers who killed 14 people in a rampage at a banquet fired as many as 75 rifle rounds at the scene, left behind three rigged-together pipe bombs with a remote-control device that apparently malfunctioned, and had over 1,600 more bullets with them when they were gunned down in their SUV, authorities said Thursday.

Anyone seen photos of Malik? Besides a Glad bag?

If you owned a gun shop and after completing the paperwork you discovered you just sold a gun to Syed Rizwan Farook... I know..I know.. the authorities check him out... but wouldn't you be the least bit apprehensive?

At their home, they had 12 pipe bombs, tools for making more explosives, and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said in a grim morning-after inventory that suggested Wednesday's bloodbath could have been far worse.

A black and yellow duffel bag stuffed with home-made pipe bombs was recovered from the home of  Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik.

Hey...you can never be to prepared for a spur of the moment workplace dispute.

Wearing military-style gear and wielding assault rifles,    Syed Rizwan Farook , a 28-year-old county restaurant inspector, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, slaughtered 14 and wounded 17 in the attack at a social service center shortly after he slipped away from an employee banquet he was attending there.

The couple were shot to death about four hours later and a few miles away in a furious gun battle with police.

As the FBI took over the investigation, authorities were trying to learn why the couple left behind their 6-month-old daughter and went on the rampage.

"There was obviously a mission here. We know that. We do not know why. We don't know if this was the intended target or if there was something that triggered him to do this immediately," said David Bowditch  assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles office.

We can’t even vet the people already here... let alone the coming onslaught of 10,000 Syrians.

But maybe if I rename it workplace dispute...

At the White House, President Barack Obama said after meeting with his national security team that it was "possible this was terrorist-related" but that authorities were unsure. He raised the possibility that it was a workplace dispute or that mixed motives were at play.

-------------------------------------

Hope we won't have to get down from our high horse to listen to the 'sermon of faulty logic' comparing the Crusades and the Jim Crow Laws with Muslim terrorists.

Normally I wouldn't believe a word Putin says but not this time

Russia says it has proof Turkey involved in Islamic State oil trade

An undated still image taken from a video made available by the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow, Russia December 2, 2015, shows the Turkish-Syrian border crossing. Russia's defence ministry officials displayed satellite images on Wednesday which they said showed columns...

Like we didn't know this was going on. We do have satellites don't we? Why do we pretend Turkey is our friend when they are no better than Russia?

Russia's defense ministry said on Wednesday it had proof that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his family were benefiting from the illegal smuggling of oil from Islamic State-held territory in Syria and Iraq.

Moscow and Ankara have been locked in a war of words since last week when a Turkish air force jet shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian-Russian border, the most serious incident between Russia and a NATO state in half a century.

In a briefing in Moscow, defense ministry officials displayed satellite images which they said showed columns of tanker trucks loading with oil at installations controlled by Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, and then crossing the border into neighbouring Turkey.

The officials did not specify what direct evidence they had of the involvement of Erdogan and his family, an allegation that the Turkish president has vehemently denied.

"Turkey is the main consumer of the oil stolen from its rightful owners, Syria and Iraq. According to information we've received, the senior political leadership of the country - President Erdogan and his family - are involved in this criminal business," said Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov.

"Maybe I'm being too blunt, but one can only entrust control over this thieving business to one's closest associates."

"In the West, no one has asked questions about the fact that the Turkish president's son heads one of the biggest energy companies, or that his son has been appointed energy minister. What a marvelous family business!"

"The cynicism of the Turkish leadership knows no limits. Look what they're doing. They went into someone else's country, they are robbing it without compunction," Antonov said.

The ministry also alleged that the same criminal networks which were smuggling oil from Islamic State-held areas into Turkey were also supplying weapons, equipment and training to the militant group.

Officials said that the Russian air force's bombing campaign had made a significant dent in Islamic State's ability to produce, refine and sell oil.

Erdogan last week denied that Turkey procures oil from anything but legitimate sources. He has said Ankara is taking active steps to prevent smuggling of fuel, and he challenged anyone who accused his government of collaborating with Islamic State to prove their allegations.
