Venice devastated by second highest tide in history

The mayor of Venice blamed climate change for the flooding of the canal city which hit the second-highest levels ever, as the city braced for yet another in the coming days ...

The second-highest level due to climate change? Hmm.... wonder what caused the first-highest level ever in 1966? You know, when there was no climate change?

Maybe it's baby brother.
Global Warming.

VENICE, Italy (Reuters) - Venice’s mayor called the city a disaster zone on Wednesday after the second highest tide ever recorded swept through it overnight, flooding its historic basilica and leaving many squares and alleyways deep under water.

A local man from Pellestrina, one of the many islands in the Venetian lagoon, died when he was struck by lightning while using an electric water pump, the fire brigade said.

City officials said the tide peaked at 187 cm (6ft 2ins) at 10.50 p.m. (2150 GMT) on Tuesday, just short of the record 194 cm set in 1966.

Night-time footage showed a torrent of water whipped up by high winds raging through the city centre while Luca Zaia, governor of the Veneto region, described a scene of “apocalyptic devastation”.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said the situation was dramatic. “We ask the government to help us. The cost will be high. This is the result of climate change,” he said on Twitter.

He said he would declare a disaster zone and ask the government to call a state of emergency, which would allow funds to be freed to address the damage.

A flood barrier was designed in 1984 to protect Venice from the kind of high tides that hit the city on Tuesday, but the multi-billion euro project, known as Mose, has been plagued by corruption scandals and is still not operative

Brugnaro said the basilica had suffered “grave damage”, but no details were available on the state of its mainly Byzantine interior, famous for its rich mosaics.

Its administrator said the basilica had aged 20 years in a single day when it was flooded last year.

Some tourists appeared to enjoy the drama, with one man filmed swimming across Saint Mark’s Square wearing only shorts on Tuesday evening.

“Venice is on its knees.. the art, the basilica, the shops and the homes, a disaster.. The city is bracing itself for the next high tide,” Zaia said on TV.

The luxury Hotel Gritti, a landmark of Venice which looks onto the Lagoon, was also flooded.

On Wednesday morning the tide level fell to 145 cm but was expected to rise back to 160 cm during the day.

Local authorities and the government’s civil protection unit will hold a news conference at 1100 GMT.

The overnight surge triggered several fires, including one at the International Gallery of Modern Art Ca’ Pesaro, with hundreds of calls to the fire brigade.

Video on social media showed deep water flowing like a river along one of Venice’s main thoroughfares. Other footage showed large waves hammering boats moored alongside the Doge’s Palace and surging over the stone sidewalks.

“A high tide of 187 cm is going to leave an indelible wound,” Brugnaro said.

Much of Italy has been pummelled by torrential rains in recent days, with widespread flooding, especially in the southern heel and toe of the country.

In Matera, this year’s European Capital of Culture, rain water cascaded through the streets and inundated the city’s famous cave-dwelling district.

Further bad weather is forecast for the coming days.

New Delhi strives to combat 'apocalyptic' air pollution

A thick gray haze blanketed India's capital on Tuesday, with authorities attempting to reduce the pollution by sprinkling water to settle dust and banning some construction.

The air quality index exceeded 400, considered "severe" and about eight times the recommended maximum, according to the state-run Central Pollution Control Board.

Buildings and monuments in New Delhi were largely obscured by the haze and residents complained of health effects.

"We can't breathe properly. My eyes are burning," said Urmila Devi, who lives in Ghaziabad, one of the capital's most polluted areas.

That ain't snow folks!

New Delhi's air pollution is over 8 times the recommended maximum! So it begs the question. Where are the climate change 'experts'?  Instead of relentlessly beating America over the head, a country who leads the way in cleaner air, why haven't they paid a visit to places like New Delhi, Beijing, etc to preach their tale of whoaWhere are they? Certainly the photos speak for themselves.  What good is it when other countries could care less about pollution even to the detriment of their own citizens?

Democrats elected a convicted pedophile on Tuesday

This is a little bizarre don't you think? The Dems want to impeach Trump then in the same breath they elect a pedophile to the Virginia State Senate!

Democrats in Virginia elected a man previously convicted and served 12 months in jail (six suspended) for having sexual relations with an underage female.

Joe Morrissey was a 57-year-old delegate in the Virginia General Assembly when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Morrissey admitted he had been engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old minor that worked as a clerk at his law firm in 2014.

On Tuesday, Democrats elected him to represent the 16th district in the Virginia State Senate.

Morrissey won with more than 60 percent of the vote in his district.

“Senate District 16 is a solid blue district. Morrissey defeated the incumbent Democrat in the primary in June,” PJ Media reported Thursday. “He eventually married the girl and they now have three children, but in 2016, Morrissey was also accused of exposing himself to a female client and pressuring her to have sex, though charges were never filed.”

-----------------------

He married her so I guess everything is hunky-dory in Democratic eyes. After their marriage, he was accused of exposing himself to another woman for sex. Wonder how his wife feels about that?

PS:

I noticed a Republican didn’t even bother to run against him because they knew a Democrat pedophile was impossible to beat. Sad...don't you think? Got me to wondering... if Morrissey was a child molester would he have garnered more than 63.95% vote?

Remember when this Republican (Chris Lee) took off his shirt a few years ago and was forced to resign?

Talk about double standards.

The Mormon Fundamentalists Killed In Mexico Had A Violent Family History With Cartels

Another title for this article could have been:

The Left Looking Out For Their Amigos

So after a family of 9 were senselessly murdered, including 6 children, their angle is to inform us of how awful the Lebaron's family violent past was as if to justify the murders? Why?

It's their journalistic responsibility to diminish these horrific murders in order to keep your mind from being 'tainted' and the road clear for illegals to come to our country.

...Because you just can't beat illegals!

Nine members of a Mormon fundamentalist family were killed in a roadside ambush in Mexico on Monday. At least six of them were children. The group, part of the extended LeBaron family, was traveling in a small convoy of SUV's in broad daylight when their vehicles were fired upon.

The victims were members of a community of about 3,000 Mormon fundamentalists living in Mexico. The LeBarons are part of a group of fundamentalists who split from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and migrated to Mexico in the 19th century when the U.S. government banned polygamy.

While a suspect has been arrested, the motive for the attack is unclear. Mexican Security Minister Alfonso Durazo speculated that the killer had mistaken the family's caravan for a rival drug cartel. But former Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castañeda told CNN he believes the group was targeted and that there was long-standing tension between the cartels and the LeBarons who have defied them in the past.

Family members have been outspoken about their belief that the murders were intentional. Alex LeBaron, a high-profile peace activist and deputy in the Chihuahua State legislature told Mexico's W radio, “It couldn’t have been a mistake. This is terrorism, plain and simple.”

The victims were identified as Christina Marie Langford Johnson, 29; Dawna Langford, 43; Trevor Langford, 11; and Rogan Langford, 2-and-a-half. Also killed were Rhonita Miller, 30; Howard Miller, 12; Krystal Miller, 10; and the 8-month-old twins, Titus and Tiana Miller.

Dawna Lanford and her son Trevor were killed in the attack.

The LeBaron family has a violent past. In 1972, Ervil LeBaron, known as the Mormon Manson, allegedly killed his older brother in a battle for control over leadership. In 1977, Ervil was convicted of killing Dr. Rulon Allred, a rival polygamist leader.

In recent years, they have clashed publicly with the cartels. In 2009, 16-year-old Erick LeBaron was kidnapped by traffickers and and held for $1 million ransom. The family chose not to pay and the teenager was returned unharmed. But two months later, after speaking out agains the kidnapping and other narco-related crime, Erick's brother Benjamin LeBaron was shot to death alongside his brother-in-law, Luis Carlos Widmer.

The incident comes as the region struggles with cartel violence. There were 33,000 homicides in Mexico in 2018; that number is expected to grow in 2019.
