Pelosi’s response was glorious:

My leadership is recognized by many around the country, and that is why I’m able to attract the support that I do, which is essential to our elections — sad to say." 

She finished with, "How long I stay is not up to them."

President Donald Trump said he hopes Democrats keep Nancy Pelosi in her role as House Minority Leader.

Those thoughts - expressed this morning in a tweet from the president - aren't an endorsement of Pelosi, however. Rather, the president said having the California Representative in charge of Democrats is good for the Republican party.

The tweet comes as Democrats are questioning if Pelosi is the right person to lead the party in the House.

"We need leadership change," New York Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice recently told CNN. "It's time for Nancy Pelosi to go, and the entire leadership team."

Criticism of Pelosi increased after Democrats lost in a House special election in Georgia this week, with Republican Karen Handel's win over Jon Ossoff.

On Morning Joe Thursday, Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., made a plea for Pelosi's ouster. 

'Nancy Pelosi was a great speaker, she was a great leader, but her time has come and gone,' the New York Democrat said. 

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, had challenged Pelosi for her leadership position earlier this year, and agreed, during an interview on CNN Wednesday night, that Republicans' ads using her as a Democratic boogey-woman have been effective.

'I don't think it's fair,' Ryan told Don Lemon. 'But, clearly, these ads using her, linking her to our candidates is still working.' 

'I mean, I wish it wasn't true,' he added. 

Asked by Lemon if he thought Pelosi was more toxic than Trump, Ryan said yes. 

'You know what, the honest answer is in some areas of the country – yes, she is. That's the honest answer,' Ryan answered. 

Ryan told Lemon that earlier that night, another member of Congress, clearly a Republican, had pulled him aside and said, 'Please tell me you're not going to get rid of Nancy Pelosi, please tell me she's not going to retire because that's who I run against.' 

'She's less popular than Donald Trump in my district,' Ryan admitted.

Pelosi wasn't the only one receiving the president's tongue-in-cheek good wishes.

Trump's comments about "crying Chuck" are in reference to Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer. The two have repeatedly sparred after Schumer burst into tears over the travel ban impacting his precious terrorists/Muslims.

Obama Issues Statement On Otto Warmbier After Being Blasted By Donald Trump & Man’s Parents

 If I was Obama, who I can't stomach, I would have said:

"Of all the countries in the world to visit Otto had to go to North Korea?"

And Obama would be right. Look, I certainly feel bad the kid is dead but wonder where his brains were when he made the fatal decision to take a trip to North Korea. He was unaware of North Korea's track record of detaining Americas on phony trumped up charges to be used later as a bargaining chip? He's an adult, but what advice did his parents give him? Certainly, had anyone close to me said they were going to North Korea my response would be...what are you..nuts!?! Look at it like this. If I gave you an all expense paid 2-week vacation in North Korea would you take it? The silver lining is that 2-weeks could easily turn into 10 years.

Former President Barack Obama has issued a statement about Otto Warmbier, American college student who died this week, days after being released from North Korea in a coma after more than a year in captivity.

“During the course of the Obama Administration, we had no higher priority than securing the release of Americans detained overseas,” Obama spokesman Ned Price said in the statement. “Their tireless efforts resulted in the release of at least 10 Americans from North Korean custody during the course of the Obama administration.”

It's true. His highest priority was getting prisoners released. In our jails and Gitmo.

Added Price, who was National Security Counsel spokesperson during Obama’s administration: “It is painful that Mr. Warmbier was not among them, but our efforts on his behalf never ceased, even in the waning days of the administration. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Warmbier’s family and all who had the blessing of knowing him.”

Warmbier’s father blasted Obama during a news conference at the time of his son’s release, when cued up with a question as to what more could have been done to secure the young man’s release before Donald Trump entered the White House.

“The question is, do I think the past administration could have done more?” he shot back. “I think the results speak for themselves.”

President Trump similarly asserted this week that “the results would have been different” had Warmbier been brought home sooner. He did not elaborate but added, “He should have been brought home that day.”

Warmbier had been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after being found guilty of trying to steal a propaganda poster from a hotel during a January 2016 visit to North Korea’s capital.

Conservative watchdog Judicial Watch is calling on Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to recover and release federal records and memos it claims were “unlawfully” removed by former Director James Comey, threatening the FBI with a lawsuit should the bureau not comply.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, penned a letter to McCabe on June 14 warning of a potential violation of the Federal Records Act, which is the basis for the federal government’s policies regarding the “creating, maintaining, and disposing” of federal records.

“As you may be aware, the Federal Records Act imposes a direct responsibility on you to take steps to recover any records unlawfully removed from the FBI,” Fitton wrote in the letter, claiming Comey unlawfully removed memos that could contain contents regarding the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. “Upon learning that records have been unlawfully removed from the FBI, you then are required to initiate action through the Attorney General for the recovery of records.”

The FBI told Fox News that they have no comment on the letter from Fitton. 

“We’re looking to get action on the records that Comey unlawfully took from the FBI, and we know initially there are memos, but depending on what the nature of the documents are, there could be liabilities for Mr. Comey,” Fitton told Fox News. 

The "memos" in question were written by Comey himself, leaving unclear how the FBI or the courts would view them; Judicial Watch insists they are official records. 

Earlier this month, Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee that he gave one of his memos regarding a meeting with President Trump to a friend, Columbia University Professor Daniel Richman, who then leaked the contents of the memo to the New York Times.

“I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter—I thought that might prompt the appointment of special counsel,” Comey said in his testimony.

Fitton said that the case of Comey removing documents from the FBI is “the Hillary Clinton email scandal all over again.”

But retired FBI special agent and former national FBI spokesman, John Iannarelli, told Fox News that he didn’t see “the case.”

“The things Comey allegedly took are not classified,” Iannarelli said. “The issue is not him taking documents, but the matter of how he released them—classified or not, there is a procedure in doing that which he did not follow.”

But Fitton insisted Comey’s memos and other related documents he may have were federal records which the Justice Department and FBI are “obligated” to get back.

“The former FBI director isn’t above the law and current leadership of the FBI should stop protecting him and take action,” he said. 

The letter said that if McCabe and the FBI do not respond by June 26, Judicial Watch will file a lawsuit in federal district court “seeking that you be compelled to comply with the law.”

New York Times assails right wing over political violence before running correction

So much for unity.

Just when a debate erupts over the role of media and mendacity in the shooting of a Republican congressman, the New York Times revives a discredited theory about the six-year-old shooting of a Democratic congresswoman.

This was so egregious and embarrassing that the Times editorial page was compelled yesterday to run a correction.

And worse than that, it was utterly tone-deaf in the wake of the shooting of Steve Scalise and four others, with the Republican whip still in critical condition. The editorial seemed to say, the hell with that, what about right-wing hatred?

The argument involving the near-fatal shooting of Gabby Giffords wasn’t true at the time, and appears even more ludicrous in retrospect. To resurrect it now undercuts any effort at breaking the cycle of guilt by association. The editorial suggests that it’s fine to blame conservative rhetoric, but not liberal rhetoric, for senseless violence. 

Here’s what the Times said:

“Was this attack evidence of how vicious American politics has become? Probably. In 2011, when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire in a supermarket parking lot, grievously wounding Representative Gabby Giffords and killing six people, including a 9-year-old girl, the link to political incitement was clear. Before the shooting, Sarah Palin’s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs.

“Conservatives and right-wing media were quick on Wednesday to demand forceful condemnation of hate speech and crimes by anti-Trump liberals. They’re right. Though there’s no sign of incitement as direct as in the Giffords attack, liberals should of course hold themselves to the same standard of decency that they ask of the right.”

Palin’s use of the crosshairs may have been unfortunate, but to link it to the mass shooting was, and is, nonsensical. 

As I wrote on the day of the Giffords shooting, well before I worked at Fox: “This isn't about a nearly year-old Sarah Palin map; it's about a lone nutjob who doesn't value human life.”

The Times has now published this correction:

“An earlier version of this editorial incorrectly stated that a link existed between political incitement and the 2011 shooting of Representative Gabby Giffords. In fact, no such link was established.”

In Tuesday’s shooting in Virginia, James Hodgkinson was an anti-Trump zealot who despised Republicans and volunteered for Bernie Sanders—not that that makes him a stand-in for every liberal who doesn’t like the president.

But Loughner was a delusional guy with incoherent political views. He had been obsessed with Giffords for years, and there’s no evidence he even saw the Palin committee’s map.

National Review’s David French noted that the Times’s own reporting from six years ago invalidates the editorial:

“As he alienated himself from his small clutch of friends, grew contemptuous of women in positions of power and became increasingly oblivious to basic social mores, Mr. Loughner seemed to develop a dreamy alternate world, where the sky was sometimes orange, the grass sometimes blue and the Internet’s informational chaos provided refuge.”

Palin tweeted yesterday that she is talking to lawyers and “exploring options.”

This erroneous attack was beneath the New York Times. Which top editor thought this was fit to print?

A gunman believed to be a supporter of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders sprayed a hail of bullets at a GOP baseball practice Wednesday morning, injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others before U.S. Capitol Police took down the rifle-wielding assailant.

The shooter, who had a violent history including arrests for battery, resisting arrest and drunken driving, was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, of Illinois, Fox News confirmed. President Trump said Hodgkinson died from injuries sustained when he was shot by police.

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign," Sanders said in a statement. "I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms."

President Trump addressed the nation before noon and revealed Hodgkinson died in police custody.

"Steve Scalise was shot and badly wounded and is now in stable condition at the hospital along with two very brave Capitol Police officers," Trump said in a White House address. "At least two others were also wounded."

Zack Barth, a congressional aide to Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, and Tyson Foods director of government relations Matt Mika were also injured in the incident. Mika was shot multiple times and was in critical condition, his family said in a statement.

Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner were both wounded in the incident. Griner was shot in the foot or leg and Bailey, who was not shot, sustained another, unspecified injury.

“Congressman Scalise is a friend and a very good friend,” Trump said. “He’s a patriot and a fighter. He will recover from this assault. And, Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers of not only an entire city behind you, but the entire nation – and frankly the entire world.”

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., told Fox News he left just before the shooting. As he walked to his car, a man asked DeSantis if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing. About 3 minutes later, at around 7:09 a.m., the shooting began, DeSantis said. He later told Fox Business he believed the man who approached him was the shooter.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., described the chaotic scene to Fox News: "We were like sitting ducks."

"Without the Capitol Hill police it would have been a massacre," Paul said, calling the scene "sort of a killing field."

Hodgkinson was shot by Capitol Police and Alexandria Police, apprehended and taken to the hospital, officials said. The incident occurred at Simpson Field in Alexandria, about 10 miles from Washington D.C. The FBI was taking over the investigation because a federal official -- Scalise -- was assaulted in the attack.

"An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us," House Speaker Paul Ryan said in an address from the floor of the House of Representatives. His words were greeted by a bipartisan standing ovation from the gathered legislators.

Ryan added: "We are all one family. These are our brothers and sisters who were in the line of fire."

FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office Timothy Slater said it was too early to tell if the attack was terror-related.

Trump had spoken to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Ryan, Scalise's wife and chief of staff and the chief of the Capitol Hill Police.

The Department of Homeland Security was monitoring the episode.

Williams was seen being taken from the field on a stretcher, but he was reportedly injured while jumping into the dugout as the shots rang out.

"Finally, the shooter was shot behind home plate as he was circling around to the first base dugout where there were a number of US congressmen and other folks," Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., told FMTALK1065. "Our security detail was able to incapacitate him at that point. I don't know if he [the shooter] was dead. He was wounded. I don't know how many times he was wounded."

Brooks reportedly used a belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding of an aide who was shot in the leg.

Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, told Fox News he "felt like I was in Iraq, but without my weapon." 

"Behind third base, I see a rifle...I hear Steve Scalise over near 2nd base scream," Brooks said. "...While all of this is going on, Steve Scalise our whip was lying on the ground near the second base position crawling into right field, leaving a trail of blood."

Brooks said the gunman was using the dugout as cover and estimated the assailant got off 50-100 shots during the attack on the 15-25 people gathered at the field.

“We were there within 3 minutes,” Brown said. “Two of our officers engaged in gunfire and returned fire.”

A man walking his dog at a park near the field told Fox News he heard police yelling at the gunman to put the gun down followed by someone in or around the dugout screaming back "Just shoot him."

Aside from Scalise, Williams, Paul, Brooks, Wenstrup and DeSantis, Sen. Jeff Flake and Reps. Mike Bishop, Jack Bergman, Chuck Fleischmann and Joe Barton were also at the field. A photographer and Bishop's aides were present, too.

Alexandria schools were placed on lockdown as the incident unfolded. There was an uptick in the police presence around the Capitol, however, the building was still open. There was not expected to be any votes held on Wednesday in light of the shooting.

Witnesses and residents described a shattered calm Wednesday morning in a normally peaceful neighborhood now plastered with police tape.

Reba Winstead, who lives in the area, described hearing a “boom boom boom boom." She said she was getting her daughter ready for school and then “all of a sudden there was gunfire in our neighborhood.”

Scalise, 51, is the House majority whip. He has represented Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District since 2008 and chairs the House Republican Study Committee. He is married with two children. Scalise's district includes New Orleans.

Since he's in leadership, Scalise has a security detail.

Scalise, who studied computer science at Louisiana State University, worked as a systems engineer before launching his political career. Scalise endorsed President Trump during last year’s presidential campaign, and has been a vocal backer of Trump’s travel ban. As leader of the powerful study group, he has also spearheaded the effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

The Congressional Baseball Game is scheduled for June 15 at Nationals Park. The game, which has been a tradition since 1909, pits Senate and House members of each party who sport the uniform of their home state.

Congressional leaders said the game would go on as planned.

Delta Air Lines and Bank of America yanked their sponsorships of New York’s Public Theater on Sunday over its controversial staging of “Julius Caesar” — which features a Donald Trump look-alike playing the role of the assassinated title character.

The free Shakespeare in the Park play has sparked outrage with its grisly portrayal of the president and bloody climax.

The characters onstage wear regular clothes throughout the outdoor production and stab a blond, suit and tie-clad Caesar to death to close out the show.

“No matter what your political stance may be, the graphic staging of Julius Caesar at this summer’s Free Shakespeare in the Park does not reflect Delta Air Lines’ values,” the company said in a statement, ending it’s four-year run as the official airline of the Public Theater

“Their artistic and creative direction crossed the line on the standards of good taste,” they added. “We have notified them of our decision to end our sponsorship as the official airline of The Public Theater effective immediately.”

Bank of America, which has sponsored the outdoor venue for the past 11 years, also blasted the nonprofit in a statement Sunday.

“The Public Theater chose to present ‘Julius Caesar’ in a way that was intended to provoke and offend,” a spokesperson said. “Had this intention been made known to us, we would have decided not to sponsor it. We are withdrawing our funding for this production.”

The Public Theater’s rendition of Julius Caser, which runs until June 18, also reimagines the Roman leader’s wife as Melania Trump.

“I wonder how much of this ‘art’ is funded by taxpayers?” Donald Trump Jr. tweeted Sunday morning, in response to the depictions of the first lady and his dad.

“Serious question, when does ‘art’ become political speech & does that change things?” he said.

Delta’s announcement came just hours before members of the Public Theater gathered for the Tony Awards — and roughly two weeks after Kathy Griffin’s severed head stunt.

Social media users had been urging the airline to pull out for days.

“Cancelled [flight] reservations,” wrote one Twitter user, who was outraged by Delta’s sponsorship. “Julius Caesar is shameful. Have integrity support @realDonaldTrump.”

Saturday's nationwide "March Against Sharia," sponsored by a group known for aggressively criticizing Islam, has in recent days become a rallying cause for right-wing extremists, forcing march organizers to repudiate some of their own supporters and prompting concern about clashes with militant leftists.

The marches, due to be held in at least 19 states, are being coordinated by ACT for America, a conservative grassroots organization that calls itself "the NRA of national security." The group has a long history of opposing Sharia, which is a legal or philosophical code derived from Islamic scripture and meant to guide the behavior of observant Muslims.

The ACT for America organizers say an adherence to Sharia among Muslims leads to abuses against women, from discrimination to honor killings.

The national coordinator of the marches, Scott Presler, is a 29-year-old Republican operative who says he, as a gay man, was first motivated to fight Muslim extremism after the deadly Orlando shooting last June.

The target in Orlando was a gay nightclub and the perpetrator allegedly pledged loyalty to ISIS. To Presler, it highlighted a problem of anti-gay bigotry in orthodox Islam.

"This was born on the Internet, from me sending out a Twitter post saying, 'Hey, I would love to do a rally, who wants to help?'" Presler told NPR. The query, he said, prompted responses from conservative activists across the country. "My email has just been pummeled with activity."

Among those who answered Presler's call is Denise Zamora. She offered to organize a march in San Bernardino, Calif, at the site of the 2015 mass shooting carried out by a Pakistani-American and his wife.

"I wasn't even familiar with anything about Sharia law," she told NPR. "I didn't know much about radical Muslims or jihad. I wasn't educated. So I started learning about everything, and when ACT for America announced they were going to do a nationwide march, I quickly volunteered."

Zamora, whose political activism began with her involvement in the Trump presidential campaign, says the San Bernardino rally, like others around the country, will highlight the problem of female genital mutilation. The practice is common in some conservative Muslim societies, but many Islamic scholars insist it is not mandated under Sharia law.

Presler, the nationwide organizer, hopes the marches will attract broad participation. "These are things that all women should support," he said.

The movement, however, appears to be in danger of veering in an extremist direction. ACT for America has a militant attitude toward Islam, and comments on Facebook suggest the marches are attracting many far-right sympathizers, including several who decorate their posts with Confederate flags.

In Arkansas, a march was organized by Billy Roper, an avowed white supremacist.

"We want to send a message to Muslims that they are not welcome in our communities," Roper said in a podcast on Wednesday. "We want to send a message to Muslims that they're not welcome in our state. And ultimately we want to send a message to Muslims that they're not welcome in our nation and, of course, endgame, on our planet."

Roper specifically encouraged "white nationalists" to attend the marches and noted they could bring weapons to those rallies where "open carry" gun laws are in effect.

Such extremism alarmed the ACT for America leadership. After his podcast, the group severed ties with Roper and put out a statement that the Arkansas march was cancelled "when we became aware that the organizer is associated with white supremacist groups. This is against all of our values."

Roper's wife, however, posted screenshots of prior emails between Presler and Roper, including one showing Presler telling Roper, "You are approved and ready to go." Asked about that communication, Presler said only that the Arkansas march was cancelled "as soon as the information revealed itself."

Militant "anti-fascist" or "antifa" groups, however, had meanwhile promised to show up at anti-Sharia rallies to confront the marchers, and right-wing paramilitary groups such as the Three Percenters, Proud Boys, and Oath Keepers were arranging to provide security at the rallies, setting the stage for violent confrontations.

Those organizations have previously clashed with "antifa" groups in Berkeley, Calif., and Portland, Ore., though Oath Keepers president Stewart Rhodes told NPR his members only engage the counter-protesters when the police fail to keep the two sides separated.

"Where the police stand up, we'll stand down," Rhodes said. "But where they stand down, we have to stand up."

Rhodes declined to say which marches will be secured by Oath Keeper volunteers, many of whom have law enforcement or military backgrounds, though they are expected at several locations. "We're encouraging our members to go to each and every one of them," Rhodes said.

The Oath Keepers website says members promise to support the U.S. Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic," and pledge to disobey any order they consider unconstitutional.

The prospect of violent confrontations at the anti-Sharia marches have local law enforcement authorities on edge. In San Bernardino, an "antifa" group has posted signs at the site of the march, urging activists to confront the marchers. A police spokesman says the department will be monitoring both sides for any signs of trouble.
