Trump has no plans for White House pet

Trump's White House could be the first since James Polk's – 168 years ago – to have no presidential pets.

My take is...

---------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON — Politically ambitious pups and kittens: Put your resumes aside.

The job of first pet — an enviable White House gig with luxurious live-in privileges, after-hours access to the president and guaranteed positive press coverage — is not currently available.

That's because President Donald Trump is not looking for a fluffy sidekick at the moment. Asked about plans for a four-legged addition to the White House, Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump, said in a statement: "The first family is still getting settled so there are no plans at this time."

If Trump stays pet-free, he will be breaking with a long held tradition of presidential pet ownership.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's had his beloved terrier Fala. President George H.W. Bush's English springer spaniel Millie was featured on "The Simpsons." When President Barack Obama's family acquired their Portuguese water dog Bo, it was big news.

"In the modern-day presidency, almost all of them have had a pet," said Jennifer Pickens, a White House social expert who wrote "Pets at the White House." Still, she noted, "all didn't necessarily have them at the beginning of the administration."

Power and pets have long gone hand in hand.

"For some reason people in power, they end up suffocating different opinions and dominating their staff, but they in some ways long for someone who will speak up to them, and a pet will," said Doug Wead, a former George H.W. Bush administration staffer who wrote books on presidential children and the 2016 campaign.

Wead noted that political pets can sometimes be used for, well, politics. He recalled an event after Millie had puppies that was "carefully choreographed so guests could see all these little puppies."

"It was calculated like a state dinner," he said.

While there have been notable pets in the White House for generations, Millie was the first modern White House dog, said Pickens. She added that Barbara Bush was the first one to "use the pet as a tool to reach out."

The former first lady wrote "Millie's Book: As Dictated to Barbara Bush," which reached the number one spot on the New York Times nonfiction best seller list in the fall of 1990. The newspaper's description: "The memoirs of the English springer spaniel who lives in the White House."

Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1998 followed Bush's lead, with a children's book about family dog Buddy and cat Socks. "Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids' Letters to the First Pets" featured photographs of the pets, details on their habits and more than 50 letters from children to the pets.

During President George W. Bush's administration, when the White House was closed for tours after 9/11, the administration tried to connect with the public through videos. Among them was the "Barney Cam" series of short videos featuring the Scottish terrier having adventures in the West Wing, with cameos from the first family and White House staff.

When he declared victory in the 2008 presidential race, Barack Obama told his daughters: "You have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House." Several months later, Bo joined the family, a gift from the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Bo quickly became a household name, appearing on morning television shows and in videos promoting the White House Easter egg roll.

Some notable pets belonged to first kids, including Amy Carter's Siamese cat Misty Malarky Ying Yang and Caroline Kennedy's pony Macaroni. The Kennedy family had a veritable menagerie of pets, complete with dogs, cats, birds, hamsters and a rabbit named Zsa Zsa.

Going back in White House history, some presidential pet stories get more outlandish. According to the Presidential Pet Museum website, President Martin Van Buren was given a pair of tiger cubs that he donated to a zoo and President John Quincy Adams was presented an alligator.

While Trump has not embraced presidential pet ownership, Vice President Mike Pence has picked up the slack. The Pences have a bunny, Marlon Bundo, and a cat named Pickles. Another cat named Oreo recently died. And they just added two more pets to the household — puppy Harley and cat Hazel. They also installed a beehive.

Pickens said she doesn't know that it matters if Trump gets a dog, but she said they are "effective tools to connect with the American people and I think pets help humanize the presidency."

Of course, while pet ownership can provide personal and political perks, it can also go wrong. Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney was dogged by criticism for admitting that during a 1983 family vacation, he strapped his Irish setter — in a pet carrier — to the roof of his car for a 12-hour drive from Boston to Canada.

Texas 'bathroom bill' advances out of Senate committee

Hard to believe we're even having this conversation.

-------------------------

In an 8-1 vote, a Texas state Senate committee agreed Friday to advance a measure to restrict public restroom use by transgender people, despite 10 hours of testimony from opponents of the bill, the Texas Tribune reported.

Senate Bill 3, a so-called “bathroom bill,” would regulate public school facilities, open-enrollment charter school facilities, and local government restrooms to be “used only by persons of the same sex as stated on a person's birth certificate.” It will now advance to the full Senate for consideration.

The measure is expected to pass and be sent to the House. Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, is said to back the measure, which is sponsored by GOP state Sen. Lois Kolkhorst.

Republicans say the measure would help protect restroom users against sexual predators, but Democrats argue that it discriminates against transgender people.

Debate surrounding the bill has already cost the state $66 million in convention business, and that figure could rise to roughly $1.4 billion if more sports, conventions and other events are canceled.

A similar bill in North Carolina cost that state hundreds of millions of dollars and led to the relocation of this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend from Charlotte to New Orleans.

In March, North Carolina repealed its bathroom law, and in May the NBA agreed to hold its event in Charlotte in 2019.

Prior to Friday’s vote, leaders of the National Episcopal Church voiced their concerns, encouraging Texas House Speaker Joe Straus in a letter to continue his stance against any proposed bathroom bill.

Kolkhorst took a jab at an Obama-era federal policy that provided protections for transgender students in public schools. That policy has since been removed by the Trump administration.

“We’re here today because Texas has a tradition of taking care of these issues and not being dictated to by the federal government,” Kolkhorst said.

This is the Lone Star State’s second attempt to pass a bathroom bill. Straus had helped block the previous effort, the Tribune reported.

Rosie O'Donnell promotes 'Push Trump Off A Cliff Again' online game

"Push Trump Off A Cliff Again," O'Donnell tweeted along with a link to the game. The game's name is a riff off of Trump's campaign slogan "Make American Great Again."

Players of the controversial game can either push Trump off a cliff, into a volcano, into a manhole or have him eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Many fans took to Twitter to express their outrage of the 55-year-old's tweet.

Interesting - you got bent out of shape with the CNN memes but this is okay? Hypocrisy thy name is Rosie.— Pete Athens (@athynz1) July 17, 2017

I loathe Trump, but this is not cool.— Jack Hodgson (@jackhodgson) July 15, 2017

This is the latest chapter in the long-standing feud between O'Donnell and Trump.

O'Donnell has called Trump "mentally unstable" and has come under fire for asking in 2016, "Barron Trump Autistic?"

Trump has aimed his fair share of offending remarks towards the comedian. He has poked fun at her weight and called her a "loser."

O'Donnel's tweet comes just under two months after fellow comedian Kathy Griffin got into trouble for posing with a bloodied Trump mask.

Griffin later apologized for the photo shoot saying, "I understand how it offends people" adding "I've made a lot of mistakes in my career."

And one of them was not moving to Canada and taking the fat blowhard with you.

Poll: Donald Trump is Still More Popular Than Hillary Clinton

It seems that even if the presidential election happened now, after all this time, Hillary Clinton would still not defeat Donald Trump.

A new poll from Bloomberg shows that the president has a 41 percent approval rating among Americans, but his former Democratic rival has only 39. The survey also indicates that Clinton has lost a great deal of support, even from those who voted for her in the 2016 election.

The polls is all the more remarkable since Clinton has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, while Trump currently helms one of the most controversial administrations in American history.

Bloomberg found that the former Democratic candidate has a 58% unfavorable rating compared to Trump’s 55%. Survey participants who voted for Clinton denied that their personal dislike caused her to lose the election, though many said they only voted for her to support the lesser of two evils.

“There’s growing discontent with Hillary Clinton even as she has largely stayed out of the spotlight,” said pollster J. Ann Selzer. “It’s not a pox on the Democratic house because numbers for other Democrats are good.”

The poll also found that Barack Obama has 61 percent favorability rating, and Joe Biden is only one point behind him.

The survey was conducted among 1001 participants earlier this month, and the margin of error was set at +/- 3.1 percent.

He's only been out of office 6 months. Wait until the eggs laid during his tenure start to hatch. Iran is one of them.

Trump says time to 'let ObamaCare fail' after health bill stalls

I've been saying this all along.

“I think we're probably in that position where we'll just let ObamaCare fail,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We're not going to own it. I'm not going to own it. I can tell you the Republicans are not going to own it. We'll let ObamaCare fail, and then the Democrats are going to come to us."

Finally someone agrees with me.

------------------------------

By Alex Pappas Published July 18, 2017

President Trump said Tuesday he's prepared “let ObamaCare fail” after the collapse of Senate Republicans' latest health care bill, indicating he's willing to move on to tax reform and other issues – and deal with an Affordable Care Act fix down the road.

He spoke after two more Republican senators came out late Monday against the Senate bill, effectively killing its chances in its current form. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., plans to call a vote on a bill to repeal ObamaCare now and replace it later, but on Tuesday afternoon left the door open to working with Democrats if that fails.

The White House focused its ire Tuesday on Democratic lawmakers, suggesting they'll regret their opposition.

"The failure of ObamaCare rests solely on the shoulder of the Democrats. They pushed it through, and they need to own the failure of it," Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

But even as the current health law suffers from rising premiums and diminishing coverage options, Republican lawmakers had faced vocal protests from constituents unhappy over the party's replacement legislation.

The collapse of the bill late Monday leaves unclear how and whether Republicans, now in total control of Congress and the White House, can make good on their campaign promise to scrap the ACA.

Trump told reporters Tuesday he was “very disappointed” that Republicans haven’t been able to pass legislation after seven years of calling to repeal and replace the law.

“Something will happen … it may not be as quick as we had hoped, but it’s going to happen,” Trump said of passing a health care bill.

Trump also called for getting “more Republicans elected” to make it easier to get his agenda passed in Congress. “I’ll be working very hard for that to happen,” he said.

The president also vowed to continue to work on implementing other campaign promises not yet fulfilled.

“We’re going to win on taxes, we’re going to win on infrastructure,” he said.

On Monday evening, Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas joined Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of Maine in opposition, making passage of the Senate bill impossible.

Republicans needed 50 votes (plus Vice President Pence as a tie-breaker) to pass the bill.

After learning the “Better Care Reconciliation Act” was effectively dead, Trump tweeted late Monday night urging Republicans to “just REPEAL” the Affordable Care Act.

“Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new health care plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!” he said, suggesting a bipartisan plan.

But at least one Republican senator said she’s against repealing the law without replacement legislation.

"As I stated earlier this year, I cannot vote to proceed to repeal the ACA without reform that allows people the choice they want, the affordability they need and the quality of care they deserve," Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski said Tuesday.

Last month on the Senate floor, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., challenged Republicans and Trump to “start over” and “turn over a new leaf” on bipartisan health care.

“We have an opportunity to go back to the drawing board, we are willing to debate and compromise on health care but we have to be included,” Schumer said on June 28.

But despite the bill imploding and Trump’s guidance, McConnell said, “this does not have to be the end of the story.”

“I regret the effort to repeal and immediately replace will not be successful, but that doesn’t mean we should give up,” McConnell said Tuesday on the Senate floor. “It’s regretful that our Democratic colleagues decided early on that they did not want to engage with us to help deliver that relief, but this does not have to be the end of the story.”

Axed FBI Chief James Comey's tell-all book goes on the auction block this week - and he could walk away a millionaire

The title of the book is:

How I botched the Clinton email investigation matter

And excerpt from the forward written by Hillary Clinton ...

"Who's extremely careless in handling classified information now"!

Should be number one on Amazon in a couple of months.

--------------------------------------------

Ex-FBI chief James Comey could make millions this week, as his forthcoming book is expected to be a hot seller when it goes to auction for publishers.

The New York Times reported Saturday that Comey, who was dramatically fired by President Trump on May 9, is pursuing a book project about his career in public service – including the tumultuous three and half months spent under Trump before getting axed.

'It's a book about leadership and his search for truth, informed by lessons and experiences he's had throughout his career, including his recent experiences in the Trump administration,' said Matt Latimer, a partner at the literary agency Javelin, which is shopping to book.

He may no longer be the top dog at the FBI, but ex-Director James Comey could become a millionaire this week as his book goes to auction for publishers

James Comey, seen arriving to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, decided to write a book after all, but it won't be a straight memoir

While Comey has upset and pleased both Republicans and Democrats for his actions involving Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, he's entrusting Republicans to handle the book project.

Both Latimer, and his Javelin associate Keith Urbahn, are veterans of GOP administrations and members of Congress, with Latimer serving as President George W. Bush's deputy director of speechwriting and as the chief speechwriter to former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Urbahn worked for Rumsfeld as well, and was the first person to tweet the news that 9/11 terrorist Osama bin Laden had been killed in 2011. Urbahn also worked for now-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Comey, according to an acquisition editor for a major New York publishing house, could get $10 million for the book, the insider told DailyMail.com in June.

'Jim Comey's story has everything, from White House intrigue to possible corruption and law breaking. His explosive story makes "West Wing" and "House of Cards" on a par with "Mister Rogers,"' the source said. 'When his proposal hits my desk, I've already been authorized to offer $10 million.'

The book could be turned into a movie as well with a prominent movie and TV agent telling DailyMail.com, 'I know one top drawer producer who's already talking to stars to cast the Comey role. He has to be tall, good-looking and a Jimmy Stewart–John Wayne–hero type.'

'I was mesmerized when I spent the whole day watching Comey testify,' the agent added.

According to the Times' reporting, Comey was initially shy about publishing a book, but later changed his mind once he decided to write something more pointed than straight memoir.

'His aim is to write candidly about his experiences serving in multiple administrations, and to use moments from his career to draw lessons about ethics, decision making and leadership,' the Times' Alexandra Alter said.

MSM spin on scandals

One of these two talked to the Russians to get dirt on their opponent.

The other sold uranium to them.

Now sit back and imagine the NYT's broke a story junior was responsible for the sale of U.S. uranium to Russia. They, as they're saying now, would call it an act of treason and they would be right. But scratch Donald Jr and substitute Clinton and it becomes a non-event.

Trump Jr

On a tip from Ed Kilbane

If the Russian lawyer approached the Clinton campaign and said we have dirt on Trump. I'm sure their response would have been...Oh please.. don't try to give us any dirt on Donald J. Trump we would never sink that low we have high ethical standards.

Junior's story is a blockbuster for the MSM. Meanwhile, Killary's email scandal, the unlawful involvement of Barry, Lynch, and Bill, trying to 'fix' the guilty is tantamount to rigging an election. Of course, that is swept under the rug.

Trump will never be accepted by the left as president. First, they tried to kill him off with a recall vote. It didn't work. Then the Electoral College was attacked because Killary won the popular vote. Boxer even called for putting an end to the "antiquated" Electoral College. That didn't work either. So now they put their saddle on a horse called Russian Collusion and if it wasn't that it would be...with all Trump's money in the highest position in the land that is definitely a conflict of interest and he should be impeached.

Just kidding they already said that.

Selfie-taking monkey and his PETA lawyers head to appeals court in battle over copyright of photograph he took of himself

I’m surprised the ALCU (another liberal dog group) didn’t take the case. The reason PETA needs the money is Naruto already ordered a Ferrari J50.

  • A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco heard the bizarre case on Wednesday; a judge ruled against Naruto last year
  • Naruto is a free-living crested macaque who snapped selfies with an unattended camera belonging to British nature photographer David Slater in 2011
  • Slater published a book with the company Blurb that included Naruto's selfies
  • PETA sued on Naruto's behalf, claiming the monkey was the copyright owner
  • Slater's company holds the British copyright for the photos, and he says it should be honored worldwide
  • Judge ruled against Naruto last year, saying copyright didn't extend to animals unless Congress wanted to change that

Can a monkey own the copyright to its own selfies?

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco heard the bizarre case on Wednesday after a judge ruled against the monkey Naruto last year.

Naruto is a free-living crested macaque who snapped selfies with an unattended camera belonging to British nature photographer David Slater in Sulawesi, Indonesia, in 2011.

After Slater published a book with the San Francisco-based company Blurb that included Naruto's selfies, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a lawsuit on the monkey's behalf, claiming it was the rightful copyright owner.

After Slater published Naruto's selfies, PETA filed a lawsuit on the monkey's behalf claiming it was the rightful copyright owner (pictured, PETA's general counsel Jeff Kerr)

A three-judge panel appeared puzzled by PETA's role in the case, asking the group's attorney why it should be allowed to represent the monkey's interests.

Attorney David Schwarz said the question had not been raised in court previously, and he urged the panel to define authorship for copyright purposes.

After the hearing, the animal rights organization said it wants to administer all proceeds from the photos to benefit the monkey, protect monkey habitats and help people study the species.

'PETA is clearly representing Naruto's best interests,' according to the group's general counsel Jeff Kerr.

Slater's company holds the British copyright for the photos, and he says it should be honored worldwide.

In fact, Slater isn't even sure Naruto is the monkey in the disputed photograph. He told the Guardian: 'I know for a fact that [the monkey in the photograph] is a female and it’s the wrong age.

'I’m bewildered at the American court system. Surely it matters that the right monkey is suing me.'

He added that his sweat and perseverance went into getting the monkeys to look directly into the camera when the pressed the shutter.

Slater is now struggling financially and told the Guardian he is considering dog walking to make ends meet.

Angela Dunning, attorney for Blurb, said the self-publishing company was confident it would prevail but wondered at the possibility if it did not.

'Where does it end? If a monkey can sue for copyright infringement, what else can a monkey do?' she said.

Slater's company holds the British copyright for the photos, and he says it should be honored worldwide (pictured, attorneys for Slater and the company Blurb outside court on Wednesday)

Dunning said Naruto can't hold copyright in part because he cannot grant permission to others to use his photos and can't benefit financially from the pictures.

The monkey, she said, is 'blissfully unaware' of what's happening in court.

Outlets including Wikipedia claim no one owns the copyrights, and that the photo exists in the public domain.

The judges did not issue a ruling Wednesday.

A federal judge ruled against the monkey in 2016, saying there was no indication that Congress intended to extend copyright protection to animals.

David Post, a legal scholar who is regarded as an expert in intellectual property law, acknowledged in the Washington Post last year that the case was 'ridiculous'.

But he added: 'PETA’s claim that the monkey owns the copyright to the photo touches on some pretty intriguing copyright issues that, in an age of robots and machine creation, are likely to have some wider significance down the road.'

Former AG Holder hears 'echoes' of Watergate; warns audience not to 'curl up' in fetal position

Almost had to laugh when I read this. Run for president in 2020!

Look who’s talking about… “integrity… Duty. Honor. Country.”

And then there's this:

"Up to now, I have been more behind-the-scenes,” Holder told Yahoo News. “But that’s about to change. I have a certain status as the former attorney general..." He sure as hell got that right!

He became the only cabinet member in U.S. history to be held in contempt of Congress for lying his ass off during the Fast and Furious investigation in which two border patrol agents were killed. Holder's counterpart in the WH used Executive Privilege to cover up his crime which is a crime onto itself.

Holder also lied under oath when confronted with the James Rosen wiretapping incident and looked the other way when the Black Panther voter intimidation took place. Of course, the inept Republicans did nothing. I take that back. They always talk a great game.

------------------------------

Eric Holder, the former attorney general under President Obama, reportedly told an audience of liberal lawyers in San Francisco that he hears “disturbing echoes’ of Watergate in current White House issues, and told the crowd of mostly liberal lawyers to continue to fight.

“You can’t just curl up in a fetal position,” Holder told the 800 lawyers at a hotel, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. He said there is “fighting to be done, there are lawsuits to be brought…you can never underestimate the power of the American people.”

The event was a fundraiser for Legal Aid At Work, a non-profit that represents low-income workers in California. The director, Joan Graff, told the paper that Holder was selected as the keynote speaker because the group has “grave concerns” about the rule of law with President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions in power.

This is not the first time that Holder commented on the current political climate that includes investigations into allegations that Russia colluded with officials from the Trump campaign.

Shortly after Trump announced his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, Holder sent out a tweet at 3:17 a.m.: “To the career men & women at DOJ/FBI: your actions and integrity will be unfairly questioned. Be prepared, be strong. Duty. Honor. Country.”

Last month, Yahoo News reported that Holder was considering a 2020 presidential run. The report said that Holder had intentions of becoming “more visible”

"Up to now, I have been more behind-the-scenes,” Holder told Yahoo News. “But that’s about to change. I have a certain status as the former attorney general. … So I want to use whatever skills I have, whatever notoriety I have, to be effective in opposing things that are, at the end of the day, just bad for the country.”

Holder gave the Yahoo interview shortly after helping to promote a new California bill that could extend ‘sanctuary’ policies toward illegal immigrants statewide.
