CAIRO—An Egyptian court on Tuesday sentenced former President Mohammed Morsi to life in prison after finding him guilty of espionage during his time in office.
Mr. Morsi was among a group of more than 20 defendants, mostly fellow senior officials from the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood party, who stood accused of sharing state secrets with Hamas and Iran's Republican Guard.
Mr. Morsi and 16 other defendants were handed life sentences. Three senior party leaders were sentenced to death by hanging.
The espionage charges against the group stemmed from a separate trial heard by the same court over the past year.
Tuesday's court session had been expected to announce the final verdict in a different case, in which Mr. Morsi faces a death sentence.
That preliminary sentence, handed down in May after he was charged with a 2011 prison break, is subject to review by Egypt's Grand Mufti, the state's highest religious authority.
The Grand Mufti's opinion isn't legally binding, but is traditionally adopted by the court.
